SCOPS invites you to the screening of A Rustling of Leaves: Inside the Philippine Revolution by Nettie Wild, Sunday, January 19 at 5 p.m.
This captivating documentary explores the hopes raised by the 1986 revolution in the Philippines, which ended the fascist dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. Despite the regime's official fall, fascist militias continued to hunt down and eliminate left-wing activists. In response, communist guerrillas continued their fight, both in rural and urban areas, often risking their lives. Convinced that the US imperialist grip would persist under the new "democratic" regime, supporters of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) took to both institutions and the streets to lead the revolution to complete liberation.
Produced in the late 1980s, Nettie Wild's film remains highly relevant today. Still under the influence of US political, economic, and military interests—now rivaled by China's expansionist ambitions—the Philippines remains the scene of a revolutionary war that is as little known as it is rich in lessons.
